This is an ideal course for young budding artists. It both provides a great introduction and fosters the development of existing visual art skills in drawing, painting, and mixed media explorations (including basic monoprint and relief printmaking).

Covering various fundamental principles, methods and techniques, this course builds kids’ art vocabulary and creative confidence, while encouraging self expression and originality. All content and materials are age-appropriate.

Cartooning & Illustration

Designed for those with a sense of humour and originality, this course will teach you how to bring your original stories and characters to life! You will learn the basic process of cartooning including character development and storyboarding. Learn to illustrate emotions, dynamic scenes and settings  using various drawing techniques and styles. Create your own comic books as well as animations through multimedia projects such as flip books and thaumatropes.

Art & Handicrafts

In this course, get an introduction to ages-old techniques such as knitting, sewing and pattern-making, weaving, embroidery,  book binding and more; and discover the role they play in some contemporary art. Then, putting new skills to practice, you will be encouraged to use your creativity and imagination to make your own, original art and design pieces using traditional handicraft materials and techniques.

Art & Photography

Learn to develop compositions and take photos with a smartphone or camera, both in colour and black and white. Tell your stories by creating photo collages, crafts and mixed media art with your photography, paintings and drawings. A personal camera/smartphone is recommended but not mandatory.

Drawing & Painting

In a hands-on, studio environment, you will learn essential skills in drawing and painting.

Working mainly from observation, you will learn how to express and articulate what you see using line, tone, colour, and texture. You will learn how to achieve a sense of form, depth, and distance using techniques such as perspective and foreshortening, proportion measurement, tonal values, and different colour properties.

Composition building will be addressed and techniques in colour mixing, paint application, and canvas/ground preparation will be taught and practiced.

Emphasis will be on more traditional subject matter and approaches to art-making.

Draw, Paint & Sculpt the Human Form

This comprehensive, 2-part course provides an introduction and builds on existing visual art skills in drawing, painting and basic sculpting of the human form. The basic principles, methods, and techniques related to the representation of the human body in 2D and 3D art will be covered.

Part 1: Drawing & Painting the Human Form (Winter 2019)
Learn and study gesture, basic anatomy, portraiture, movement and expression, tonal drawing and painting using pencil, charcoal, ink, pastel, acrylic and/or watercolour.

Part 2: Sculpting the Human Form (Spring 2019)
Using a variety of techniques for modelling clay, casting and finishing plaster, creating wire sculptures and carving wood, students will learn the proportions of the human body, how the musculoskeletal system gives us our shape and how to reproduce its appearance in different media. The sculpture activities will contain a design component, where students will sketch out their ideas and engage in the creative process throughout.

Group critiquing and discussions of contemporary issues and trends in the visual art practices is an important part of this course. This course is especially recommended for students who intend to take Portfolio in the future, whether you are applying for the secondary admission, or planning for post secondary such as Animation, Interior Design, Architecture etc.

The course will cover a variety of content, based on specific entry requirements of the school(s) you have chosen. You will learn to plan and execute on time your own original ideas, while producing works based on specified requirements.

Group critiquing and discussion of contemporary issues and trends in visual art practices is an essential part of this course, helping hone the soft skills you may need for a potential interview, presentation and/or a hands-on admission test.

Recommended for grades 5–8.

The course will cover a variety of content, and each student will be mentored based on the specific entry requirements of the school(s) you have chosen.

You will learn to plan and execute on time your own original ideas, while producing works based on specified requirements.

New skills/techniques will be taught, and a relevant work of known artists/art professionals may be introduced to help illuminate a wider context in the chosen field of study.

Group critiquing when appropriate, is an essential part of this course, helping hone the soft skills you may need for a potential interview, presentation and/or a hands-on admission test.

Recommended for grades 9+.

After School Art Adventures

Monday – Friday (Full Week)

Program Includes

  • Daily pick-up from Birch Cliff Public School at 3:30pm (students arriving from other schools can be dropped off by their parents/guardians)

  • 15–20 minutes of supervised outdoor activity in the park next door (weather permitting)

  • Learning different techniques and concepts with a new projects each week

  • Small classes limited to 8-10 kids per instructor

  • All art materials and a healthy snack
