Independent Studio

Different approaches, styles and techniques in landscape painting, from traditional to contemporary will be explored in this course. You will learn the fundamentals of landscape composition, including space, depth, distance, size, proportion, and perspective. Special attention will be given to colour mixing, paint application, and image building flow, from start to finish. Personal style development will be encouraged, and you will receive plenty of one to one attention in a small size class. Examples of famous artists will be shown, and demonstrations of techniques will be provided when appropriate. Class critiquing is an important part of this course. This course is suitable for all skill levels. A materials list will be provided.

A Foundation for Total Beginners

If you wish to draw and paint but don’t have any experience and don’t know where to start or what to expect, this is the course for you! With a step by step, hands-on process you will study light and shadow, shape, form, depth and distance. You will be introduced to the basics of colour, composition, and spatial organization.
Various materials and approaches will be discussed and samples of work as well as demonstrations of techniques will be provided. Class critiquing is an important part of the course, helping you to better articulate ideas and form opinions. In our small classes you will get plenty of individual attention. The truth is we are all born artists. Any small child, even a baby capable of holding a pencil, will begin to move it across the page making a mark. Drawing comes before walking, speaking, writing.

Painting from Photographs

It is not simple to paint from a photograph, as the result is often a disappointing flatness and dullness. This course will teach you what it takes to translate a photo image into a painting composition. You will learn, hands-on, how to “read” a photo, and how to select and correctly interpret the visual information captured by the camera. Figure & Portrait Drawing & Painting

The focus of this course is on exploring ways to capture form, movement and expression working with a live model, and from photos. Short gestures and longer and sustained poses will be studied. This course will cover the skeletal and muscular aspects of anatomy as well as basic portraiture. You will learn how to build a painting using a classical approach, as well as some contemporary styles and techniques.
